A solar eclipse occurs when the moon's shadow is on Earth and blocks the rays of the sun. When the moon is a new moon that is when a solar eclipse can occur. The moon will be between the sun and Earth and it will casts its shadow on the Earth. So, when its shadow is on Earth the sun will not be able to shine its rays on earth and then you will have a solar eclipse.
